oh my! I am fine I am fine! Im in Bangalore and not near the Coast. Sorry to worry you all. Thank you for all the concerned emails and comments. I cant believe at the extent of the devestation caused by the tsunami. I was away on the weekend with no internet connection and I heard about what happened on Sunday evening. My parents had tried to call me but in Hampi there wasnt any mobile reception! they were soo worried. They were insisting I fly to HK asap. I am so lucky. Thank God. I mean the past three weekends I was at all the places that have been affected - Pondicherry (I hear the epicenter of the quake was off the coast of Pondy), Mammallapuram and Chennai! all on the Coast. When my parents finally got through to me on Sunday evening, after I left Hampi, the toll was 1500. And now they are reporting the toll to be 70 000!! I am so shocked at the statistics. Especially Sri Lanka..and its become such a backpackers hotspot. Parikrma is sending three boxes of clothes, food, pots and pans tomorrow to a coastal town (I forgot the name) that has been badly hit. Ive been contemplating going to help out with the relief work on the coast whether its with distributing the food/clothes, on the telephone hotline or with the vaccine camps they are putting up. I mean I am IN India! So today I called up Red Cross. Im waiting for their call back. If there is something concrete I will bus tonight to Tamil Nadu state (approx 8 hours away depending which city/town I go to) and spend five days or so there. Ill definitely update here soon!

I will take care! *hugsss*

Oh yes and thank you for your birthday wishes. I had a great 21st! I will tell you more about it next post.

Games; we played steal the key & pass-the-parcel. Soo fun. Each layer had like a toy or a candy and something the kid had to do such as do a dance or sing a song. When we ran out of ideas on some rounds we played other games like wink murderer.

Bobbing pears; it was so much fun. Their heads were soaked!

yay time for a quick entry. Merry Christmas everyone!! a little early but I know I wont have a chance to go on the net over the weekend. I say each day is so busy but honestly I felt the last four days has topped them all. We were up to our heads doing Christmas decorations. Im not going to be modest about this; I am an expert holly leaf cutter. lols. We spent Monday and Tuesday doing preparations for the half-day Christmas programmes on Wednesday and today. The school had invited some business people from donor companies for this Christmas show as a gesture of gratitude. When they sang and performed on Wednesday I had this permanent grin on my face. I felt immensely proud of the kids. I dont know how to put it into words but these kids have become like my own children. When I saw them up there dancing and singing I was so happy. And the funny thing is the first thought that came to my mind was my dad who loved to carry his video camera and tape me when I had some Christmas school performance. Now I feel I understand a bit of how parents feel. The extent of love they have for their children. Its amazing. lol I remember those times when I was embarassed because my dad would photograph/tape everything...and now its like that is exactly what I want to do with these kids. So the next time my daddy brings his video cam which is probably my graduation ceremony, Ill be giving him one big wet kiss on the cheek. lols. One thing that stands out about these kids is they love being photographed. You should seem them clammering all over each other to get in the photograph. I thought initially its because to them cameras are a novel thing. But after a while I see that these kids yearn for love and when they are photographed they feel loved, remembered, identified....

Today after school, all the volunteers went to Hope Home for a Christmas party! It was mad. We spent the first half hour decorating the house. I brought a small Christmas tree, crepe paper, balloons, some other materials and this cute Jesus in the manger set. We had so much fun decorating. I brought the wrong balloons...when we blew them up they were in a heart shape! I was so suprirsed. But I guess its okay cos Christmas is all about God love and grace :) Afterwards we had chips, German christmas cake (Thomas parents sent him some goodies from Germany), and soda. Then we played Pass a Parcel and Bob the Pears (not apples)! It was soo fun. I have some classic shots of them with their entire head dripping with water. I will definitely post them up! aiyo I need to get off the net now. Im leaving on a bus in less than an hour to Hampi where I will be spending Christmas. Cheerios.

today isnt the best of days. since this morning I have this throbbing headache and on top of that I have my monthly. after taking 3 panadols the pain has subsided. i hate this time of the month because I get so moody. I thought I was going to break someones ' neck (specifically this guy on a motorbike) while walking downtown. Part of my tiredness is due to the fact that I got into Bangalore at about 6am this morning after a bumpy 8 hour bus ride from Chennai. I got home at about 7am and hit the sack. I missed my first two remedials..

over the weekend I went to Mamallapuram (which took me ages to pronnounce.(thomas and I have nicknamed it M-town..its easier). its on the east coast of India below Chennai and above Pondicherry. I had wanted to go there to relax and sure enough I did. I indulged in a mid-budget hotel..paying 400 rupees. Its not a lot in Aus currency...around 12 dollars but since the beginning of the trip ive been going to budget places paying about AUD 4 so it sounds a lot. Anyways, so I checked into Hotel Sun Breeze. And it had a fantastic pool! so I spend most my weekend with a novel on the one hand and a papaya drink on the other hand. I did some sightseeing in between. I rented a bike and cycled about 5km north of M-town. I loved every moment of it. it was refreshing to get fresh air and to just absorb the views of palm trees and the beach. So my weekend in short was good with the exception of the bus journey there and out (16 hours + all up). Oh I must mention the frustration I had with my outward bus journey. I was running late to catch the overnight bus to M-town because of the bad traffic and I left the airport quite late (I was seeing Stephanie off). When I got to the main bus terminal in Bangalore, called The Majestic, I spent 20 minutes trying to locate the platform (no. 14B). It was utterly frustrating and I was nearly in tears when I finally got on the bus. In tears not because I was lost but tears of frustration. I kept getting conflicting directions. I must have asked a half dozen of people and I ran up and down the terminal (which is big). grr never again! Im trying to not generalize but Ive been noticing Indians in general dont like to admit they dont know the answer to questions or not know the directions so they give 'some' directions, right or wrong. ugh Anyways, I was thankful to get on the bus. I was the last. The bus conductor has a passenger list and delayed the bus to wait for me to turn up..*sighs* that act kept me from not bursting into tears when I got on.

okays, so Laura has been in India for a bit over a month and there has not been an entry about toilets. lols. im surprised myself. I guess being Asian and India is not exactly the first Asian country Ive travelled I am used to seeing squat toilets. The Indians call the toilets we use at home 'western toilets'. whats funny is that they call the squat toilets 'Indian toilets' when in fact they are just the same as in any other Asian country Ive been to. I have a somewhat high tolerance towards the state of toilets. Even if it looks downright filthy, wet and smelly I can usually cope and I will always choose to go than not go. I dont recall yet of turning down a toilet because it was too gross to enter (and trust me I have seen bad ones...the ones on the trains rank quite badly). But what is the chances that in the last 24 hours I went to the two worst toilets in my life...in fact they were consecutive too. I wont go into the details. Perhaps ask me in person. Briefly, both toilets were in the back of kitchens... On the bus journey from Chennai to Bangalore I was the only female on the bus. So when we stopped for a pit stop at 3am in the morning all the men were just doing it publically (not deterred the fact that I was there) in the bush. I didnt feel like buying chai after that. there wasnt any public toilets where we stopped ( i dont know how bus drivers choose their pit stop). But there was this restaurant open...not really open but the kitchen was alive preparing food for the new day. So I asked if I could use their toilet. I wished I didnt. They pointed to a door at the other end of the kitchen. I looked inside and it was an enclosed area with no windows, a bucket of murky water and a drain. Not pothole, no squat toilets, no nothing..but a drain and a wet wet ground. *shudder*

the second toilet wasnt any better. Again the 'toilet' was at the end of the kitchen. But this kitchen was really big and seemed like an endless walk through the kitchen with men just staring at me as I manouvered around the tables, pots, buckets, shelves with my overnight bag (I had gotten off the bus already). It was made worse because I had to wait for this man to finish his business in the toilet as I just waited with my huge bag with the kitchen staff staring. for some unknown reason when the man finally walked out, he started grinning. it was very off-putting...cos he knew I was waiting to use the toilet/. this one was filthy. there was also no door. instead was a flimsy wooden plank that looked like it was going to give way. there is something I want to say...generally about using toilets in INdia. but ask me in person.

Im not going to end this entry with toilets. what else happened today...well after school I headed downtown (after a detour back home to get some panadols...wonder tablets). Actually I was reluctant to go downtown because all day I had been feeling tired. but I had promised the principal I was going to start an arts and craft club afterschool to pass some time for the younge kids who dont have 'special class' (Ill explain that next entry)and I really needed to get some materials. Im starting tomorrow! I need some craft ideas (pleasee)! not too difficult cos im doing this for Mercury and Venus class (grade I and II). I think tomorrow I will be doing animal masks using paper plates. I need something new each day after school. Hopefully I want to squeeze in cooking classes. nothing fancy...probaby just the stir and freeze type.like chocolate bananas in pyjamas (um did i make up that name)..on is it monkey magic? okay im going a little delirious...but you know when you cover banana with melted chocolate...cover it with crushed peanuts and freeze it....i cant think of the name. I also want to make rice krispies...but I have seen any marshmallows.! poo

I had promised to put up photos but i forgot. sorry! Ill put some up of the mini-olympics next time. I dont think I have written an entry in here since then. but it went really well!

shall write soon! *muah*

wheeee` internet! yesterday there was internet problems around the area Im living and no one had connection. And over the weekend I was in Mysore (the second largest city in Karnataka state...after Bangalore). Mysore is one of the hometown of one of the Parikrmas staff, Kachana so we stayed with her family. They were amazingy hospitable. On Saturday we walked around Mysore and visited the markets. I brought mum incense sticks and oil perfumes both of which is famous there. We also went inside the Mysore Palace. Its huge. I dont have my camera on me to post the photos here, but click here.

On Sunday, Kachana took us to a series of attractions from temples to bird sanctary to summer palaces. Her mum, who is an awesome cook, packed a picnic for us. Because her family is from Tamil Nadu, they cook heaps of dosas (which I love) and idlis. Mmmm I already know im going to miss eating Indian food when I leave. Eating with my hand is no longer a foreign idea to me. Anyways, I was so exhausted i decided to catch an earlier bus on Sunday night. The other reason is I am not a morning person...! I did not want to wake up at 5am (!) on Monday morning to make it back to school on time. I need a nice long sleep especially since Steph, Thomas and I were giving a presentation at St Joseph College of Commerce that Monday afternoon. The presentation went better that we thought. We got a great response from the audience and the principal had invited us back to give a similar presentation to the other half of the college! soo yippee.

The rest of this week is going to busy busy because Stephanie is leaving India on Friday so Im accompanying on her last visits to Hope Home on Wed night, Sumangali orphanage on Thurs arvo, some temple she wants to see on Thursday too and finally her last dinner in the MG area on Thursday night. Today we are going to commercial street to get some gifts for her family and then all the volunteers are meeting up to watch Veer Zara. My first Hindi movie! im excited...i hope I understand it...lols. Oh yea on Thursday morning we are having Parikrmas Mini-Olympics!! I will take heaps of photos and try to post it here.

Im so surprised I havent updated in a week. Ive havent had many chances to write here and when I have the time the internet in the office is down! Over the weekend I went to Pondicherry, a small coastal town that was once a French colony, with the other volunteers. It was great. I had a much needed weekend away from noise and pollution. I asked Kim along. She left Manipur in July because of the conditions there and is now living in Hope Home with her uncle, Obed. She is about the same age as us and helps out at Sahakanagar school. She had an absolute ball. It was a weekend of firsts for her. It was her first time to drink orange juice (!), eat pasta (!), drive a motorbike, go to the beach and swim in the sea (!). Monique, Kim and I left a day earlier (Thursday night) and took an overnight bus to Pondicherry because Kim had to be back by Sunday morning. On Friday we visted Auroville, an international 'city' in the making. Even though I dont quite agree with its vision and values it was a fascinating place to visit especially the Matrimandir. Oh, before that we went to Reppos beach and walked around. In the evening we met up with Rachna, Thomas and Stephanie who had arrived on a later bus and had French food that night. Mmmm On Saturday, it was beach day. We decided to rent bikes and cycle to the beach. I thought it would take us ages to reach Reppos beach because it was 7km away but it didnt. I havent rode a bike in ages and I forgot the fun of it. I think what made it such a pleasant trip was because we were surrounded by palm trees and thatched huts.

I only worked at Sahakanagar school in the morning today because this afternoon Stephanie and I went to Christ College to give a presentation about Parikrma to attract some local volunteers. Its really weird. The college takes in students from year 10 to 12 and also degree and grad students. And all students (yes, including degree students) have to go to classes from 9-4pm Monday to Friday and there is half day classes on Saturdays! Oh my I couldnt survive in such a college/uni. On top of that, the teacher told us there is a 90% attendance required! After that we hit St Josephs College of Commerce which is reallyy near MG road. We spoke to the principal to organize a presentation time next week. She wants us to present to an audience of 200 students. Please help me..I hate public speaking

[Im in this internet place...and the owner is playing backstreet boys! lols. I havent heard the song in ages...and cant think of the title. Oh wait, the lyrics is "backstreets back alright.." its cracking me up!]

Tomorrow is International FOod Day! woo hoo Im making chinese fried noodles. Im crossing my fingers that it will come out fine again. I had given it a go last night for dinner. Im also making jello! I brought three flavours but I only have one rectangle plastic box. I want to make three layers. Oh dear that means I should get back home asap because I need to wait for each layer to set before topping the next layer. Im going to Hope Home again tomorrow night. Im so excited.

[ahh the internet guy has pressed replay on the same backstreet boys song...its a sign that I must leave this place]

I got my photos burnt on CD! but I had trouble uploading them. Ill try and get a photo or two up on this page.

bye now

p.s. I havent updated you all about my sandals. You have probably read from my previous posts Ive been having a headache with my sandals breaking. Well I have forgot to tell you I am on my 5th...yes FIFTH pair of sandels. The fourth one broke yesterday...inconveniently on my way to home after school. I had to walk barefoot for about 400m...:( Ive become fast friends with the shoe owner near the school cos I brought my last pair from him. I was given a discount on the first time because I assured him I would be back buying another pair of sandels ( I just knew my new pair was going to break). And it did..while I was downtown. I brought a pair of sturdy ones but it broke y-day. Now I have a new (well its gotten really dusty already) pair and I have a guarantee from my new friend that if it breaks again I get a new pair. whew. lets see how long this pair will last!

p.s.s. I had something else to say but I forgot..what was it? OH YEAA
whoever is reading this and knows me, can I have your postal address pleaseeee. I would like one of my remedial groups to do some creative writing besides writing stories. And I was thinking if they could write postcards to Australia, US, Hong Kong, UK wherever. And you can kindly (nudge nudge) write back. so could anyone help me out. just e-mail to my addy: luraah@gmail.com

thats it. I had really better get going. jello is waiting
